Dear Dr. Young,
I hope all is well with you. My experience in Uruguay will
shortly be
over, and I want to give you a quick update on some of the great
things I
have been doing while here.
As you may recall, I spent my first two weeks at a local University
Hospital and a private hospital in Montevideo. My third week
was spent at the
local childrenīs hospital in Montevideo. This was a great
experience. The
physicians I worked with saw patients in the hospitalīs outpatient
physiatry clinic. The patientīs were very interesting, and
some extremely
medically complex children were seen during the week.
The physicians I worked
with continually impressed me with their knowledge base and
professionalism.
I spent this past Saturday with Dr. Hugo at his practice in
Periapolis. He
has a practice in a historic Hotel in the town that serves as both a
medical rehabilitation facility and therapeutic spa. It is not
a traditional
practice found in the United States, but is very interesting and I
believe I will learn a lot when I return. I will be spending
tomorrow and Friday
there with him. Tomorrow we will be seeing more patients at
his center
and I will have the opportunity to follow one of the patients I saw
on
Saturday during her rehabilitation sessions. On Friday I will
again be seeing
outpatients at his center and will attend a hydrokinesitherapy
session
with him.
On Monday and Tuesday of this week I saw patients at local
clinics and hospitals in Punta del Este (the town/city I am staying
in). I was
with the other local physiatrist in the area (there are only two in
this region
of Uruguay, Hugo and Dra. Carloina Corrasco). I split my time
between
seeing outpatients and inpatients with her in her at a local clinic
and at two
hospitals. Luckily, I also had the opportunity on Tuesday to
spend a
few hours with a physical therapist who spoke English. He was
a great
teacher, and I learned a great deal about the therapeutic modalities
commonly
used
here.
As a whole, this trip has been one the most influential periods of
my
life. I have learned more than I could have ever imagined.
Of course I
learned some new things about PM&R, but maybe more importantly,
learned a great
deal about things outside of medicine. I will be returning
home with a new
perspective and in many ways, as a slightly different person.
This has
been an amazing experience. I truly see this as the first of
many similar
experiences.
I look forward to sharing more with you in the future.
Sincerely,
Brett
